Message from grand-daughter of Indiana Hall of Fame Member Burl Taylor
Hi,
My name is
Sherri Parker, and I am the grand-daughter of Burl Taylor who is in the
Hall of Fame. I am in Library School working to finish my Masters
of Library Science at IUPUI. I am also currently working at
DePauw University as Coordinator of Library Technology and am webmaster
of the library website. One of my library school projects
assigned for my High Tech Learning class was a team project in which we
had to create a wiki. If you are not aware, a wiki is a website
that encourages anyone to add content to, and it is set up in an
easy-to-use environment for those not familiar with web design.
Wikipedia is a great example of this in action.
The core of
our assignment was to create original content for the Internet that was
not currently available via Google or Wikipedia. We had to use
wikispaces, (although it was not my preference - pbwiki works
better). This was tough, in that we are doing this class online
and our group members are scattered - there were 4 of us.
Anyways, I threw out the idea for the Indiana Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall
of Fame. I noticed on the site that there is little content about
the people who were chosen. So, my idea was, that we could create
a wiki for the Hall of Fame members, and begin with adding content on
Burl Taylor. I had a lot of original content on him, then my team
could build upon that. So, thus the wiki began to take shape.
Any person
could create a page on the wiki. You just have to sign up for a
free account. Check it out.
http://inhpahalloffame.wikispaces.com/. My hope is that from your
site, you could link to this for the Hall of Fame information. I
would also like to post information to wikipedia on your association
and this page. In addition, I would like to offer my web page
skills pro-bono if you are interested. I think your site could
use an update. So, let me know if you would like any help on
that. I have a pretty full schedule working full-time and am in
school, but I enjoy web design and could lend a hand if needed.
I hope you
like the site. If you see anything that needs changed, etc., let
us know. Also, if someone from the Hall of Fame would want to be
an additional administrator on this wiki site, we could add you.
Let me know your thoughts. This was an exciting endeavor for
me. My Dad was junior world champion in 1955, Virgil Taylor, and
my uncle Hallie was Indiana State champ in 1958. So, I was able
to add content to them via Burl's page as well. This was a fun,
and my extended family members are very excited to see all of this.
Cordially,
Sherri L. Parker

2009 Indiana State Tournament to be Held in Anderson
Camp Atterbury indoor horseshoe Courts
building damaged by winds
June 8, 2009
FROM RON WOMACK, PRESIDENT
Thanks for your help and directions on the web
page. In this e-mail I would also like to ask Fred if he would enter information
about the 2009 state tournament being held at the Anderson courts.
Original Rumored Report below:
It
has been reported recently to the web site editor that the indoor
horseshoe courts building at Camp Atterbury, where the state tournament
is held each year, was damaged by heavy winds. It was also
reported that the structure will be or is in the process of being torn
down as beyond safe repair. The cost versus safety issue has not
explained to the editor, but the outcome of the damage is that the
state tournament will have to be held somewhere else this year.
We have not heard if there happens to be some plan to convert the
Camp
Atterbury Courts from inside to outside courts? Unless there was
severe damage to the floor and the courts, it would seem to be a
possibility, but we have not seen a picture of the damage or received
an on site report. I was told through the grapevine that two
sites under consideration for the 2009 state tourney were Kokomo and
Anderson. As far as the web site editor knows, this is
speculation, but reported unofficially to you as it was reported to
me. As soon as we get an official statement from Ron Womack or
another officer, we will publish their comments on this page. (We
now have the official statement from Ron Womack printed at the
beginning of this article.)

Great news for INHPA--the NHPA sanctioned league tournament will again
be in Indiana, October 10-11, 2009. The NHPA officers have decided to
alternate this tourney each year between us and MO.
This year 3 teams from IN competed in MO in this tourney (Oct
4-5)--Whitley County HSC, Connie Reimer, Carolyn Coyle, Lawrence Hively
are the new 2008 National League Champions--CONGRATULATIONS. Marion
HSC, Sonny Franks, Jim and Jenny Morris finished 5th and New Castle HSC
Ralph, Charlie Luellen and Ron Womack finished 7th. Connie Reimer also

Again it is with saddened hearts that we have 3 dedicated members that
have gone to their eternal resting place in the past few weeks. Stan
Loy from Pierceton, IN, Sam Good from New Paris, IN and Roger Able from
Columbia City. Their dedication, friendship, humor and competition will
be missed by all. Our prayers will continue to be with their families

NHPA Historian Gary T. Kline
Passes Away March 6th, 2008
The author of the excellent book "The
Official N.H.P.A. History of the World Tournament 1909-1980", Gary T.
Kline, has passed away. After I published on the Curt Day Web
site, an interview by Paul Day with his father Curt Day, Gary sent me a
personal email expressing his regret of hearing of the passing away of
Curt Day. I would like to share that email in remembrance of Gary
Kline, received by me on December 21, 2004:

Four days before Christmas
and Gary was thinking about Curt Day and his family. Thank
you Gary for all your time and efforts to permanently record the
history of horseshoe pitching in the world tournaments of the
past. Those of us who toss the shoes and enjoy reading about the
past great ones will always cherish your
work.
